Approximately 25,000 individuals converged in Madrid, the Spanish capital, to voice their support for the state pension scheme. This demonstration is part of ongoing protests across Europe addressing a multitude of concerns, including the rising cost of living, school conditions, and accusations of corruption.

On Saturday, demonstrators from various parts of the country marched through Madrid, with a general election scheduled for next month. The Spanish state pension scheme faces significant pressure due to an aging population, low birth rates, wage stagnation, and a decreasing ratio of active workers to pensioners.

Protesters expressed deep concern that the state pension scheme could be substantially undermined depending on the election outcome. This year, the nation's monthly pension expenditure reached a record high, nearing 14.5 billion euros ($16.2 billion).

The march route spanned from Atocha train station to Gran Via, one of Madrid's most prominent and bustling streets. Many participants carried banners with messages such as “protect and guarantee our pensions”.

Emilio Delgado, the deputy spokesperson for the left-wing party Mas Madrid in the Assembly of Madrid, stated on X, “no pension should be below the minimum wage. A lifetime of work deserves a dignified retirement.”

Key demands from the protesters include maintaining pension indexation to inflation and eradicating the gender pension gap. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has accused the Popular Party (PP), a right-wing party, of intending to reduce inflation-linked pension increases if they win the upcoming election.

Conversely, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, the leader of the PP, asserted on Monday that his party would continue to increase pensions in line with inflation if victorious. Prime Minister Sanchez has pledged to safeguard pensions should he remain in office, maintaining that the current system is financially sustainable. The pension system's reliance on state funding has grown due to an increasing number of pensioners and rising monthly payment amounts.
