French Ambassador to Qatar, Arnaud Pescheux, has stated that President Emmanuel Macron's recent State Visit to Doha was successful in securing winter gas supplies for France and strengthening defense cooperation. Ambassador Pescheux described the visit as one characterized by "friendship, gratitude, and solidarity," alongside a strong sense of ambition.

During a breakfast event at the French Residence in Doha on Saturday, Ambassador Pescheux announced that Qatar will provide France with two terawatt-hours of liquefied natural gas per month throughout the winter. He also noted that discussions between Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and President Macron included efforts to secure shipping, establish an insurance mechanism to reduce transport costs, and identify land, road, and rail routes as alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz.

The Ambassador reiterated that France's proposal for a defensive coalition to ensure navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz remains active. Regarding Iran, Ambassador Pescheux indicated that both leaders share a similar political perspective. He emphasized that a military solution is not viable for issues concerning Tehran's nuclear activities, ballistic missile program, support for regional proxies, and the potential closure of Hormuz, stating, "there is no military solution, and there never will be." The leaders engaged in a detailed discussion on the U.S.-Iran negotiations, with Ambassador Pescheux highlighting Qatar's role as a mediating power and France's as a balancing power.

In terms of defense, Ambassador Arnaud Pescheux reported that both nations have agreed to modernize the Rafale fleet. Additionally, a letter of intent was signed, selecting KNDS and JCD for the land forces' 8x8 program. Discussions have also commenced regarding enhanced land-air capabilities for detection and interception.

Ambassador Pescheux recalled France's strong support for Qatar during the U.S.-Iran war, including condemnation of Iranian attacks, military assistance, joint patrols, and the deployment of detection and interception capabilities. "Shoulder to shoulder, we demonstrated the strength of our military partnership," he stated, expressing gratitude to Qatar's armed forces for safeguarding 6,000 French nationals residing in Qatar and an additional 2,000 who were stranded during the conflict.

The French president's visit also encompassed investments in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing, as part of the Strategic Investment Partnership initiated in 2024. Furthermore, plans were discussed to expand French language education in Qatari schools and foster closer ties between universities, including HEC and Sorbonne.

Ambassador Pescheux commended the ceremonial welcome extended to President Macron, noting the escort by Qatari Air Force jets and the city of Doha being adorned in France's colors. He concluded by describing Qatar as "a choice of heart and reason, and a choice for the future."
