Just over two years ago, shortly after his 18th birthday, Kimi Antonelli experienced a crash at Monza during his inaugural Formula One practice session. Today, he is on the cusp of the world championship and has the opportunity to become the sport's youngest title winner in Austin, Texas, this weekend. This significant step towards that dream was achieved after he secured pole position on Saturday.

The Mercedes driver outpaced Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds, with Verstappen's teammate Isack Hadjar qualifying third, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Although five other drivers can mathematically still challenge him, their hopes are slim. With six races remaining, all are traditional Grand Prix weekends, as Singapore was the last Sprint event. Each Grand Prix victory awards 25 points, with 18 for second place, 15 for third, and so on, down to a single point for tenth. This means a maximum of 150 points are still available. In the event of a tie in points at the season's end, the driver with more race wins will be crowned champion.

Antonelli's teammate George Russell remains his closest competitor. However, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, four-time champion Max Verstappen, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, and defending champion Lando Norris are still technically in contention. Here's a breakdown of what each of the six potential contenders requires to finish the season as world champion:

Kimi Antonelli

Current Standing: First place with 340 points and eight Grand Prix wins.

What He Needs: Antonelli can clinch the title in Austin this Sunday if he wins the race, George Russell finishes ninth or lower, and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. A victory would bring Antonelli's total to 365 points and nine wins for the season. Even if Russell were to win all five remaining races and draw level on points, Antonelli would still win the championship due to his superior number of race victories. If Antonelli finishes second or lower in Austin, his next chance to secure the title will be in Mexico City on November 1.

George Russell

Current Standing: Second place with 238 points, trailing by 102 points.

What He Needs: Russell's most optimistic scenario involves winning all six remaining races, which would put him at 388 points. For this to be enough, Antonelli would need to score 48 points or fewer across those six races, essentially finishing sixth in each event. Russell, who began the year as a favorite due to his experience and the car's performance, started strongly with a win in Australia. However, reliability issues and his driving style have seen him overtaken by his younger, more aggressive teammate.

Lewis Hamilton

Current Standing: Third place with 229 points, 111 points behind Antonelli.

What He Needs: If Hamilton wins all six remaining races, he would finish with 379 points. Antonelli would then need to score 38 points or fewer. In Austin, Hamilton would be eliminated from championship contention if Antonelli wins and Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. He is also out if Antonelli outscores him by 14 points or more. Hamilton's second season with Ferrari has been more competitive, but he has only secured one win this season. Realistically, his pursuit of a record eighth title will likely be deferred to another year.

Max Verstappen

Current Standing: Fourth place with 221 points, 119 points behind Antonelli.

What He Needs: If Verstappen wins all the remaining races, he would finish with 371 points. Antonelli would then need to score 30 points or fewer, which translates to finishing worse than seventh in every remaining race. If Antonelli scores exactly 31 points, they would tie at 371 points with eight wins each, and the tiebreaker would be second-place finishes. In Austin, if Antonelli wins the race, Verstappen is eliminated from championship contention regardless of his own finish. Despite Red Bull's recent progress, which has brought Verstappen back into the conversation, it may have come too late for this season, though it serves as a warning for next year.

Charles Leclerc

Current Standing: Fifth place with 215 points, 125 points behind Antonelli.

What He Needs: If Leclerc wins all six remaining races, he would finish with 365 points. Antonelli would then need to score 24 points or fewer, essentially finishing eighth or lower in every remaining race. Leclerc has a very slim chance of winning the championship, and his teammate Hamilton has shown better performances this season. His early retirement at Ferrari's home race in Monza highlighted how his season has slipped away.

Lando Norris

Current Standing: Sixth place with 201 points, 139 points behind Antonelli.

What He Needs: If Norris wins all six races, he would finish with 351 points. Antonelli would then need to score 10 points or fewer across the six remaining weekends. In Austin, Norris would need to outscore Antonelli by at least 15 points simply to remain in contention for the championship.
