Manchester United manager Michael Carrick departed Old Trafford on Sunday to the sound of his name being chanted by the home supporters, but his tenure may be nearing its end. The message conveyed to his players and club captain Bruno Fernandes, who remained an unused substitute, was starkly different. The 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth marked a 40-year low for the struggling club, plunging it into new depths, with fans making their displeasure known to United’s owners and playing staff. This latest loss, their sixth of the season, leaves the club precariously close to the relegation zone, having not secured a win in eight matches across all competitions. This opening seven league matches represent United’s worst start to a season since 1986.

The situation between Fernandes and Carrick escalated after Wednesday's 4-1 UEFA Champions League humiliation at Como. Fernandes, the reigning Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year, was benched following his criticism of Carrick’s tactics. Since his arrival in 2020, the Portuguese international has been a fan favorite at Old Trafford, seemingly cementing his legacy with his Player of the Year award, achieved during a season where United finished third in the league, a feat they have only bettered twice in 13 years. His record number of assists in a Premier League season was particularly impressive given the team’s overall lack of attacking spark.

Carrick's interim spell following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January saw an upturn in fortunes, leading to his permanent appointment in the summer. However, this tenure now appears to be faltering, with a reported rift between the manager and United’s star player.

Manchester United fans, known for their loyalty, have shown increasing discontent, with boos becoming more common in recent seasons. The adulation Carrick received upon leaving the pitch might signal the end of his time at the helm. While Fernandes is not portrayed as the villain, the fans’ message, delivered through their favored player, resonates throughout the dressing room, indicating a collective sentiment of ‘enough is enough.’ The team’s performance, characterized by being outrun and outfought, has drawn significant criticism.

Manchester United’s history is replete with periods of rebuilding and comebacks. Even legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson faced calls for his dismissal in 1990 before leading the club to FA Cup glory and an era of unprecedented success. The club’s wait for a league title, from 1967 to 1994, was eventually broken by Ferguson’s signing of Eric Cantona. Today, United stands on the brink, with their position above the relegation zone being a genuine concern, raising the possibility of a similar fate to their cross-town rivals, Manchester City.

The club finds itself at a crossroads, and the reported divide between Carrick and his captain, Fernandes, who questioned tactics that hindered the team’s pressing against their Italian opponents, suggests the manager is more likely to face dismissal. Former England teammate Jamie Carragher commented to Sky Sports, stating, “Manchester United need to make the change tonight (Sunday). The fans have taken the side of the manager, which is not about him being the manager, it’s about him being a huge figure in United’s history – and those players have done nothing compared to teams of the past. So Carrick is always going to win that fight – and rightly so – with Fernandes, no matter how talented a player he is. But also United – one of the biggest clubs in the world – are 16th in the table right now and that can’t happen – it can’t continue and Carrick needs to be relieved of his duties. He wants to be sacked. It’s become untenable. He doesn’t want to be sat in the dugout with those players. Imagine going into training with Fernandes after not bringing him on? It’s a rancid dressing room. He wants to be put out of his misery.”

Gary Neville, a former Manchester United defender and Carrick’s teammate, added, “Carrick is popular, but the owners, the sporting department and the players are not. They will probably make a decision that will disgust United fans, but it is probably necessary. The club is a mess.”

Amidst rumors of his sacking, Carrick stated in a post-match press conference, “I take the responsibility. I totally understand the situation, I’m not expecting anything, I’m carrying on as normal and I love this place.” He further commented on his decisions, “I always do what I feel is going to be the best for the club, whatever decision is made. I’ve tried to do everything I can to not be in this position and for a number of reasons, whatever they are, we’ve not been able to stop that happening to the position we’re in. I’ve always felt that support and always felt that connection with the [fans]. I have to say it is mixed emotions, I didn’t really expect that from the supporters. The respect that I have for them and for them to show that back meant an awful lot.”

Despite Carrick’s sentiments, his popular support may not sway the Manchester United hierarchy. The club, now under its 11th manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, has seen its last Premier League title in 2013, transforming Old Trafford into a ‘house of horrors’ for its managers.
