Italian prodigy Kimi Antonelli is on the cusp of his first Formula One drivers' championship after securing his ninth victory of the year at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday. The 20-year-old Antonelli, starting from pole position, delivered a commanding performance at the Circuit of the Americas, finishing a substantial 13.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

While the championship is not yet mathematically secured, Antonelli has extended his lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell to 123 points with five races remaining. Russell faces a must-win scenario in the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix to stay in contention; otherwise, the title will go to Antonelli, who has enjoyed a dominant second F1 season.

"I'm aware [securing the championship] is close, but the mindset doesn't change," Antonelli stated post-race. "I want to finish the season on a high, to go into 2027 with high hopes."

The strategic brilliance of Antonelli and Mercedes proved successful. In a race where several competitors opted for two pit stops, Antonelli executed a perfectly timed single stop on Lap 25, maintaining his lead. "It was a perfect way to end the weekend; it was an incredible team effort, especially from strategy to believe in me and go for one stop," Antonelli commented.

Antonelli has previously won five consecutive Grands Prix this season, including the Miami Grand Prix. His victory in Austin marks his second win in the United States this year, with the Las Vegas Grand Prix still to come in November. "I know we're very close, but, yeah, we try to finish on a high and hopefully we can clinch it very soon,” Antonelli added. “I’m very excited. I would love to clinch the title in style with a great result. “I’m just going to try to enjoy every moment because they’re moments that will always be remembered.”

Four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished third, 17.485 seconds behind Antonelli. Having won every championship from 2021 to 2024, Verstappen has been mathematically eliminated from this year's title race, marking his first season without a world championship in two years. "Our overall pace was not good enough, and the tyres we had available were not the right ones," Verstappen explained. "We still managed to get on the podium, maybe a bit lucky with the [Virtual Safety Car] at the end."

A Virtual Safety Car was deployed on Lap 52 following the stoppage of Valtteri Bottas' Cadillac on track. The VSC period lasted until the penultimate lap, effectively preventing any challenges to Antonelli's lead.

In the constructors' standings, Mercedes has extended its advantage over Ferrari to 133 points, with Mercedes holding 607 points to Ferrari's 474.
