Former FBI Director James Comey is confronting a third set of criminal charges initiated by the administration of United States President Donald Trump. Unsealed documents revealed on Monday that the Trump administration has accused Comey of two counts related to the unlawful dissemination of information pertaining to national defense. Comey, a prominent critic of Trump, has not been formally indicted in this case and has denied any wrongdoing.
This marks the third instance since President Trump took office in January 2025 that his administration has sought to bring criminal charges against the former FBI director. In a statement shared on the online platform Substack, Comey reiterated his stance, denouncing the prosecution attempts as a campaign of political retribution. "Well, now they’re back again. it would almost be funny if it weren’t such an appalling abuse of the Department of Justice, one that we cannot become numb to," Comey stated. He added, "Nothing’s changed with me. I’m still innocent, and I’m still not afraid of these people, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary."
Comey also commented on the ongoing nature of these actions, noting that President Trump is only midway through his second term. He suggested that further criminal charges might be forthcoming. "The next couple years are going to be hard for all of us," Comey remarked. "It’s really important that we stand straight and keep the faith in America." Further details are expected.
