A passionate motoring enthusiast has acquired a unique CC44 vehicle number plate for an impressive Dh6.7 million ($1.8 million) at a highly successful auction in Dubai. This significant sale to an anonymous buyer was the highlight of the evening, where 60 rare number plates were auctioned by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) at the Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City over the weekend. The event generated a total of Dh65.7 million in sales, with CC44 leading the pack. Other high-value plates included BB18, which sold for Dh6.6 million, BB80 for Dh5.9 million, and BB117 for Dh1 million.

The RTA's 121st open auction featured a variety of three, four, and five-digit number combinations across several codes, including AA, BB, CC, H, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z. The strong turnout and high bids underscore the persistent allure of distinctive number plates for drivers seeking to make a statement on the road. Bidders demonstrated a strong willingness to invest in premium plates, with sought-after numbers achieving record prices.

This event follows previous record-breaking sales, such as an Emirati bidder's purchase of Dubai's number 7 plate for a record Dh55 million in April 2023, as part of the One Billion Meals campaign. This surpassed the 2008 record set by businessman Saeed Al Khouri, who paid 50 times the initial Dh1 million bid for the coveted number 1 plate at a charity auction in Abu Dhabi.

Dubai's burgeoning market for premium vehicle plates is set to be further enhanced by the upcoming launch of the UAE's first escrow-backed online marketplace, the Mazal app. This platform will secure buyers' funds until ownership transfer is finalized, offering a layer of protection to a second-hand market that has historically relied on less formal channels like social media, independent brokers, and manual transactions. The Mazal app operates in compliance with RTA regulations, aiming to provide a secure and verified marketplace that boosts confidence in high-value transactions. Data from Mazal indicates that Dubai's private number plate market is experiencing annual growth of approximately 20 percent, with single-digit and special-combination plates commanding substantial values. Over the past three years, the market for Dubai's status-symbol vehicle plates has seen transactions totaling Dh1.7 billion, with Mazal set to manage these significant deals.
