Bodies of victims from a devastating boat accident lie in the forecourt of a community mosque ahead of their burial in Gorau, Sokoto State, Nigeria, on August 20, 2026. Dozens of individuals lost their lives when a vessel capsized on a river in northwest Nigeria, according to statements from officials and residents in Sokoto state. The ill-fated boat was reportedly transporting workers on their way to farms located in Gorau town.

Rescue operations pressed on Thursday near Gorau within the Goronyo local government area. While authorities refrained from providing an immediate official death toll, a Reuters news agency witness observed 50 bodies—many wrapped in traditional cloth and mats—resting in the forecourt of a local mosque in Gorau awaiting burial.

Ibrahim Musa, a former councillor in Gorau, informed the AFP news agency that dozens of victims had already been laid to rest. "The situation is bad," Musa stated. "We already buried 46 bodies and five others have just been brought out of the river."

Local resident Samaila Garba shared that his 13-year-old granddaughter, Jamila Usman, tragically lost her life in the accident. "You know, during the rainy season, most women and children go to the farm to work," Garba explained to the Associated Press. Another resident, Aminu Dan Hajiya, noted that he routinely uses the same waterway to reach his farm and considers himself fortunate to have avoided the vessel. "In fact, almost every household in the community has been affected," he told the Associated Press.

Dahir Kure, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency in the state, confirmed to AFP that rescue operations were actively underway. "We are now at the scene of the boat accident and have begun rescue work," Kure said, adding that authorities were still "collecting necessary information on the incident" and unable to furnish a final death toll right away.

Boating accidents remain a frequent occurrence in Nigeria, where dozens drown annually across busy rivers and waterways. These incidents are typically attributed to overloading, poor maintenance, or a failure to comply with established safety regulations. Similar tragedies include a boat capsizing in Jigawa state last month resulting in at least five drownings, and a January incident where at least 26 people drowned after a vessel carrying farmers and fishermen from Jigawa to Yobe state capsized.
