Two men have been formally charged with offences under the UK's National Security Act following an incident in September at RAF Fairford. The airbase, which is utilized by the US for strikes against Iran, was the scene of the events that led to the charges.
Mohmed Abdulkarim, aged 24, faces a charge of assisting a foreign intelligence service. Concurrently, Nouman Essghir, also 24, has been charged with entering a prohibited place for a purpose deemed prejudicial to the UK.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, who leads National Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK, stated that authorities believe the country Abdulkarim was allegedly assisting is Iran. This development follows the US's decision to remove its bombers from RAF Fairford on security grounds shortly after five British men were arrested near the military base in southwest England on September 27.
Counter-terror police have also reported that a 25-year-old UK-Iranian national, initially arrested earlier this month and re-arrested last week, has been released without charge but remains on police bail. The incident that triggered a major response was the sighting of three suspicious vehicles near the US-operated airbase in Gloucestershire on September 27.
