The United Kingdom has seen a significant surge in demand for essential supplies, including tinned beans, bottled water, and battery-powered radios, following a government advisory urging citizens to prepare for potential shortages. Online grocer Ocado reported that several water varieties and staple items like beans and soup were out of stock. Iceland, a frozen food retailer, noted a 40% increase in sales of tinned goods, attributing it to consumers heeding the government's message. Similarly, the Booths supermarket chain observed a comparable trend.

Retailers specializing in electronics and outdoor gear, such as Robert Dyas and Maplin, also reported a substantial rise in sales for radios, torches, and power banks. Ollie Marshall, managing director at Maplin, stated, "Within hours of the Be Ready announcement we saw people reach for the basics – a torch, a wind-up radio, a power bank. Torch sales nearly quadrupled and radio sales almost doubled in three days."

Last week, the UK government released guidance encouraging individuals to "be ready" for national emergencies by stocking up on necessities and registering for government support. The advice recommended that households be self-sufficient for a period of three days in the event of an emergency. This guidance comes amidst concerns over potential disruptions from severe weather, drought, flooding, as well as threats related to artificial intelligence and hostile actions from Russia and Iran.

The 'Be Ready' campaign advised households to take simple steps to ensure preparedness for temporary disruptions to essential services. The online checklist included recommendations for bottled water, non-perishable food items, hand sanitiser, cash, copies of important documents, blankets, and warm clothing. Notably, the announcement preceded the arrival of Storm Austen and Storm Boelo in the UK, periods when sales of such items typically increase naturally.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis commented that the initiative aligns the UK with many European nations that already emphasize a three-day preparedness message in their campaigns. The advice proved beneficial for outdoor equipment stores, with Preppers Shop UK reporting a 650% increase in sales of "off-grid" items. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting expressed satisfaction with the public's proactive measures, stating, "Having a few everyday essentials at home, from tinned food to torches, helps households prepare for disruption, whether that's flooding, power cuts or burst pipes. We can all play our part in making Britain more resilient."
