QatarEnergy has extended its suspension of liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries to the Italian utility Edison until the end of December, according to a Reuters report on Tuesday. This extension of force majeure, which moves the deadline from early December, will impact three additional LNG cargoes destined for Edison, a significant customer for QatarEnergy in Europe. QatarEnergy had initially notified Edison of these cancellations in April, following trade disruptions and damage to its LNG facilities in Qatar attributed to the U.S.-Iran war that commenced in late February. This development comes as regional conflict continues to disrupt energy supplies and shipping routes. QatarEnergy had previously extended force majeure on LNG deliveries to other major buyers, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, earlier this year due to regional insecurity affecting shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, had previously stated that missile strikes on Ras Laffan had reduced the country’s LNG export capacity by at least 17 percent. Despite these ongoing suspensions, Edison maintains a long-term contract with QatarEnergy for an annual supply of 6.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas to Italy. This agreement, initiated in 2009 and spanning 25 years, represents approximately 10% of Italy’s total natural gas consumption.
