President Sheikh Mohamed has bestowed the First Class Order of Zayed II upon the courageous crew of flydubai flight 1073, acknowledging their bravery during a harrowing mid-air emergency on September 30 that ensured the safety of all passengers. The President received the distinguished crew at a council meeting attended by prominent UAE leadership, including Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid. The honours were formally presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, who lauded the crew for their exceptional actions and unwavering sense of responsibility. During the gathering, leaders emphasized the crew's high level of responsibility in safeguarding passenger safety and security, underscoring that the preservation of human life and security remains the UAE's paramount priority and ultimate value.
The incident involved flydubai Flight 1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which experienced a terrifying plunge of 17,000 feet in under a minute when the first officer attacked the pilot, Capt Smit Machchhar, and attempted to seize control of the aircraft. In an exclusive account with The National, Capt Machchhar recounted the terrifying moments when his co-pilot repeatedly struck him with an axe before initiating the plane's descent towards the Arabian Desert. UAE prosecutors revealed that the flydubai co-pilot's actions constituted a terrorist plot aimed at causing mass casualties at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport. Investigations indicated the suspect, a 29-year-old Omani national, was motivated by the September 11, 2001 attacks and had pursued a career in aviation with the specific intent of executing such an operation, according to his confession. Following Capt Machchhar's efforts to open the cabin door, other crew members and passengers successfully restrained the assailant and aided the injured captain.
During the ceremony in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed commended the crew for their swift and decisive actions that ultimately saved lives. The crew members expressed their gratitude to the President and their pride in receiving the prestigious honour. The event was attended by several senior officials, including Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance; Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region; Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, chairman of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and chairman and chief executive of the Emirates Group; and Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, alongside numerous other sheikhs, officials, and guests.
