Security personnel cordoned off a street outside the Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad on August 20, 2026, after Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered the transfer of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan for medical treatment.
According to local media reports, Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan was moved from prison to the hospital under heavy police and security escort. The founder of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was transported from Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail to Shifa International Hospital in the capital late on Thursday, complying with the Supreme Court's directive, as reported by Pakistan’s Geo News.
Sources informed Geo that authorities had finalized preparations earlier in the day to relocate the 73-year-old ousted prime minister. The Supreme Court had mandated on Tuesday that the transfer be executed within two days, despite a government petition filed against the ruling.
While PTI broadcasted the preparations live, the party has not yet issued an official statement regarding the move. The Pakistani government has also withheld immediate comment.
This relocation grants a long-standing request from Khan’s family and party members, who had spent months voicing concerns over his well-being. Per the court order, Khan will undergo evaluation by a medical board featuring his personal physician.
Uzair Bhandari, one of Khan’s lawyers, stated that Khan's upcoming hearing is set for September 16, and the court mandate requires him to stay hospitalized until at least that date. This marks the most extended duration Khan will spend outside prison walls since his initial imprisonment in August 2023, which followed convictions in multiple corruption-related cases that both he and his party maintain are politically motivated.
The former cricket star turned politician was removed from office via a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022.
