A devastating high-speed train collision near Toledo in central Spain on Wednesday has resulted in the deaths of at least 40 people, according to sources from the Spanish Civil Protection agency. The two trains, operated by Renfe and Iryo, were en route from Madrid to Seville and were carrying over 540 passengers when the crash occurred shortly after 9 am local time. The collision led to the derailment of two Iryo wagons. A government spokesperson for the Castilla La Mancha region confirmed the incident, stating that the exact cause and the number of injured individuals are still under investigation.

This tragic event echoes a similar accident that occurred nine months prior on the same line, involving trains from the same operators, which claimed the lives of 46 people. Images from the scene in the village of Urda, Toledo, showed rescue teams and Civil Guards members arriving amidst the wreckage. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his shock and stated he was in constant communication with Transport Minister Óscar Puente and the president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page. He affirmed that emergency services were actively working to assist those affected and ensure their safety, with the response being coordinated across all involved administrations. “My affection, solidarity and support go to all the victims and their families,” Sanchez posted on X.

Footage broadcast by regional Castilla La Mancha Television depicted a derailed train, with at least one carriage precariously positioned on an elevated section of track. Twisted metal, broken panels, and debris were scattered across the embankment below. Manuel Galan, the mayor of the nearby town of Urda, informed Cadena SER that local authorities had been requested to prepare emergency facilities, including a sports hall, to accommodate passengers and the injured. The previous crash in January, which involved a derailed train colliding with an oncoming train near Adamuz in Cordoba province, had previously sparked discussions regarding the adequacy of railway maintenance investments in recent years.
