The UN Security Council is set to conduct its seventh straw poll on Friday, continuing the intense competition to select the next secretary-general. While this poll is unofficial and anonymous, it offers valuable insights into how council members perceive the various candidates. In the previous round, votes were color-coded to differentiate between the five permanent members – Britain, China, France, Russia, and the US – and the ten elected members. This process is crucial as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is scheduled to conclude his term at the end of the year. His selection in October 2016 required six straw polls before an agreement was reached. This year's race features a notably crowded field, with eight individuals nominated: Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Argentina’s Rafael Grossi, Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan, Senegal's Macky Sall, Ecuador's Ivonne Baki, Chile's Michelle Bachelet, Ecuador's Maria Fernanda Espinosa, and Uganda's Olara Otunnu. The UAE's Lana Nusseibeh joined the race last week following a lack of consensus. Although Ms. Grynspan has led in prior polls, her success is not yet guaranteed. The significance of this selection is amplified by the fact that the UN has never been led by a woman in its 81-year history, and several female candidates are vying for the position. The role of UN secretary-general is a demanding one, involving the chief administrative and representative duties of the organization. Beyond budgetary and planning responsibilities, the secretary-general serves as a key diplomat, tasked with brokering peace and ensuring global security. The chosen individual will face the formidable challenge of addressing numerous ongoing global conflicts, including the Iran war, the Sudan conflict, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
