Teams representing Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, and several other nations recently gathered in Dubai for a vibrant social and sports day hosted by the Zimbabwe community in the UAE. Drawing a crowd of more than 400 attendees to the Al Quoz district, the event featured competitive matches in football, netball, basketball, and various other sports.

Beyond the athletic competitions, participants and spectators enjoyed live music, arts and crafts, traditional food, and a bustling market showcasing small businesses and community organisations.

Speaking at the event, Zimbabwe’s ambassador to the UAE, Isaac Moyo, emphasised the deeper significance of the gathering. “They are powerful platforms for connection, unity, wellness, inspiration, and cultural and national pride,” Moyo told The National. “More than just games, today is a celebration of our unity and shared identity, not just as proud Zimbabweans, but as a strong and united diaspora family, thriving here in the UAE.”

The initiative was organised by the Zimbabwe Community in the UAE in partnership with the Zimbabwean Business Council UAE to foster resident support and strengthen bonds with other expatriate groups. Organiser Marshall Mupandawana noted the event's growth since its inception in 2024, expressing gratitude for the participation of friends from Sri Lanka, Uganda, Kenya, and beyond, while looking forward to an even larger gathering in the winter.

Simba Makahamadze, chairman of the Zimbabwean Business Council UAE, highlighted the value of the diaspora. “By investing in platforms that bring our people together, we strengthen the social fabric that underpins every business relationship we build,” he said.
