BP announced its highest quarterly net profit on Friday, surpassing analyst expectations. This surge in earnings was driven by increased energy prices and robust refining margins, partly influenced by the Iran war. The strong performance follows similar high earnings reported by Shell and TotalEnergies, both of which also exceeded profit expectations and opted to increase share buybacks.

BP reported a third-quarter underlying replacement cost profit, its measure of net income, of $8.46 billion. This figure significantly exceeded the $7.33 billion anticipated by analysts and was a substantial increase from the $2.2 billion recorded a year prior. This marks the highest quarterly net profit achieved under BP's current profit parameter, which was introduced 18 years ago.

The company also reported strong operating cash flow of $14.8 billion and a reduction in net debt to $13.9 billion, allowing BP to meet its net debt target a full year ahead of schedule.

Strategy Reset

This financial milestone signifies a key step in BP's ongoing turnaround strategy, initiated after a recalibration in 2025 following a less successful venture into renewables. These results represent the second full quarter under Chief Executive Meg O’Neill, highlighting her focus on operational performance. Ms. O’Neill, BP's first external chief executive, is implementing cost-cutting measures, divesting assets, and paying down debt while preparing to unveil her long-term strategy in December.

"It really was a banner quarter for the refining business," Ms. O’Neill stated in an interview with Bloomberg TV. "We had very strong margins from the BP-operated refineries, we also had very strong underlying performance. We were able to capture the opportunity provided by the market."

BP shares saw a 1.2 per cent increase in early trading, outperforming the broader European energy companies' index, which rose by 0.1 per cent. RBC analyst Biraj Borkhataria noted in a research report, "BP has continued its streak of beating expectations and demonstrating it is highly leveraged to the macro environment. Operational indicators and controllables look strong."

Surplus Cash

The geopolitical climate, including the Iran war, has escalated oil and fuel prices, consequently boosting refining margins. This has raised questions about how oil companies will allocate the additional profits generated. BP indicated that a portion of this surplus cash would be used to settle outstanding liabilities from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. The disaster, caused by a blow-out on the BP-operated Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico, resulted in one of the world's most severe oil spills and claimed 11 lives. BP had previously set aside $69 billion for the spill, with related payables and provisions currently standing at $5.94 billion, according to the latest BP data.

All three of BP's business units exceeded expectations. The customer and products division demonstrated the strongest outperformance, reporting a pretax profit of $6.95 billion, surpassing the average analyst estimate of $6.3 billion and significantly up from $1.72 billion a year earlier. BP's refining indicator margin increased to $46.7 per barrel in the quarter, up from $29.6 per barrel in the second quarter and $15.8 per barrel in the same period last year. The company also reported a substantially improved gas marketing and trading result.

BP recorded $4 billion in impairments this quarter, primarily linked to its transition businesses. In recent months, the company had written down over $5 billion, mainly related to its investments in Archaea, its solar unit Lightsource BP, and other low-carbon ventures. BP is scheduled to provide a strategy update on December 15.
