Dubai Police have successfully apprehended a six-member gang suspected of defrauding an individual of Dh2.6 million (approximately $707,964) through a cryptocurrency scam involving an unlicensed exchange. The perpetrators allegedly lured the victim into a cryptocurrency trading deal, subsequently absconding with Dh2 million in cash and Dh600,000 in virtual assets. Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department were instrumental in identifying and arresting the suspects, while a specialized team worked to trace and secure the stolen virtual assets.
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly sought to purchase a substantial amount of cryptocurrency using cash and engaged an unlicensed exchange to facilitate the transaction. Dubai Police stated that the victim transferred virtual assets to decentralized digital wallets, which are designed to obscure the owners' identities. The suspects then seized the cash and fled, reportedly believing that the nature of digital transactions and the difficulty in tracing funds between virtual wallets would impede any investigation.
Following the incident, law enforcement initiated a thorough investigation, gathering evidence to identify and apprehend the culprits. Concurrently, a technical analysis team meticulously examined virtual asset transactions, tracing the flow of funds across various digital wallets. Despite the inherent complexities of the case and the rapid movement of cryptocurrencies, the police reported arresting the suspects in a short timeframe. Furthermore, specialist experts successfully traced and recovered all the stolen virtual assets before they could be moved or dissipated.
While the police did not disclose specific details about the arrested individuals, they issued a stern warning to the public against engaging with unlicensed entities offering cryptocurrency services, particularly those promising high returns in short periods. The authorities emphasized the importance of verifying the legal authorization of virtual asset trading providers before conducting any financial transactions, advising the public to utilize only approved providers to safeguard against fraud and theft.
This incident follows a similar case in 2023 where another gang was fined over a Dh10 million Bitcoin investment scam that impacted more than 180 individuals nationwide. That group had utilized social media to promote cryptocurrency investments, promising significant returns despite lacking the necessary licenses. The Dubai Criminal Court had found that gang, composed of one Pakistani national and six Bangladeshi nationals, had posted videos promoting cryptocurrency mining and investment. The individuals were each fined over Dh321,000 and an additional Dh20,000 for operating in virtual asset activities without official authorization.
