The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) took a decisive step on Thursday, exceeding market expectations by increasing its key interest rates by 100 basis points, or 1 percentage point. This move is intended to anchor inflationary expectations and combat mounting domestic and external economic pressures. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) consequently raised the overnight deposit rate to 20.0 percent, the overnight lending rate to 21.0 percent, and the main operation rate to 20.5 percent. The credit and discount rate was also adjusted upwards to 20.5 percent.

This unexpected rate hike caught many bankers and analysts by surprise, as the prevailing market consensus had anticipated that interest rates would remain unchanged. Banking expert Hany Aboul Fotouh, speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, explained that the decision underscores significant concerns regarding persistent inflation risks and evolving global macroeconomic trends. "Global interest rate trajectories—particularly decisions by the US Federal Reserve and major central banks—remain a critical variable for Egyptian monetary policy," Aboul Fotouh stated, highlighting the CBE's objective to maintain the attractiveness of local debt instruments and curb the outflow of 'hot money'.

A significant catalyst for this decision appears to be the US dollar's approach to EGP 56 within local banking channels. This currency pressure introduces immediate risks of cost-push inflation, particularly affecting imported food commodities and essential production inputs. Furthermore, escalating regional geopolitical tensions have amplified market uncertainty, increasing the potential for disruptions in global energy markets, trade routes, and supply chains. The central bank affirmed that this tightened monetary stance is designed to counteract the pass-through effects of rising food and energy costs, thereby protecting domestic purchasing power in an unfavorable global economic climate.
