A liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier belonging to Qatar Gas Transport Company, the Al Mayeda, was struck by "unidentified objects" while navigating the Gulf on Friday evening. The Qatar Gas Transport Company confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday via the Qatar Stock Exchange. Fortunately, no crew members sustained injuries, and no environmental damage has been reported.

The company stated that the vessel remains in a "safe condition, operational" and that the full impact of the incident is currently under assessment. The Qatar Gas Transport Company provides essential towage and marine support services to Qatari ports and terminals.

This incident marks the latest in a series of attacks on commercial shipping in the region, particularly since the commencement of the US-Israel war on Iran in February. Data from the International Maritime Organization and the UK Maritime Trade Operations indicates that over 120 commercial ships have been impacted since the war began. Iran, which previously closed the Strait of Hormuz early in the conflict, has issued warnings that vessels attempting passage without authorization would face severe consequences.

The frequency of these attacks has escalated since the United States reinstated a blockade on Iran’s southern ports in July. October proved to be the most volatile month of the war thus far, with at least 29 ships being hit, surpassing the 20 attacks recorded in March.
