Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, a European gold medalist and two-time Olympian, has passed away at the age of 34, her family announced. A statement shared on the athlete's Instagram account on Sunday confirmed that Mageean died at 6:30 AM, surrounded by her loved ones, following her fight with cancer.
Mageean's passing occurs just weeks after her marriage to her long-term partner in Belfast. She had been undergoing treatment for bowel cancer, having disclosed her diagnosis in July 2025 and later revealing that the disease had progressed to an advanced stage.
Hailing from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, Mageean rose to prominence as one of Ireland's foremost middle-distance runners, setting numerous records across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. She represented the Republic at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2021 Tokyo Games. Her most significant athletic achievement came in 2024 when she secured the 1,500 metres title at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. However, an Achilles tendon injury prevented her participation in the Paris Olympics that same year.
Throughout her illness, Mageean maintained a remarkably positive outlook, expressing her continued ability to "find the joy in everyday" and thanking supporters following her diagnosis. In a June interview with the BBC, she conveyed her gratitude for a career that "many others didn’t get to have."
Tributes have flooded in for Mageean, who also earned European bronze and silver medals in the 1,500m (in 2016 and 2022, respectively) and secured a second-place finish in the same event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she competed for Northern Ireland.
The Olympic Federation of Ireland stated, "The country has lost a hero." Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O’Neill remarked, "Beyond the medals, records and sporting accolades, Ciara will be remembered for her warmth, courage and tremendous strength of character." The Republic of Ireland's prime minister, Taoiseach Micheal Martin, expressed his deep sadness at Mageean's "untimely passing."
