Nine individuals have tragically lost their lives following the crash of a business jet into a residential neighborhood in South Florida, United States. All passengers on board were fatally injured in the incident. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy characterized the event as a “horrific tragedy” in a social media post on Sunday. Staff from the Federal Aviation Administration were en route to the crash site to assist the National Transportation Safety Board in their investigation, Duffy stated.
Disturbing cockpit recordings from shortly before the crash, obtained by LiveATC.net, captured the pilot discussing “manageable” ice issues before reporting a rapid loss of altitude. The pilot subsequently communicated, “We’re going to crash into the ground.” The aircraft, identified as a Learjet 60, a popular business jet model, was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport confirmed it was a private jet but did not disclose the identities of those on board.
Videos of the crash circulating online appear to show the jet impacting the ground at high speed and at a steep angle, resulting in a massive explosion. Footage from the aftermath depicts flames emanating from debris and fragments of pavement, with onlookers present in the vicinity. The plane's wreckage was found mere meters from homes and vehicles. However, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis informed reporters that there were no apparent casualties on the ground. Describing the crash as “cataclysmic” from the scene, DeSantis remarked that the plane “looked like a missile going down, and left a big crater on the side of the road.”
