Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has formalized a landmark agreement with OpenAI and G42, positioning itself as the inaugural energy company to implement OpenAI’s Frontier AI technology. This strategic move is part of Adnoc's broader initiative to enhance the application of artificial intelligence across its extensive operations.

The agreement was witnessed by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, during a meeting with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Monday. The deal was executed by G42 through its subsidiary, Inception42.

This integration of advanced AI capabilities is designed to streamline Adnoc’s operations, fostering more cohesive decision-making in operational, investment, and commercial domains to boost overall efficiency and productivity. The technology will leverage OpenAI’s GPT models, utilizing inference infrastructure situated within the UAE.

This collaboration signifies a significant stride towards Adnoc's objective of becoming the world's foremost technology and AI-driven energy enterprise. The agreement was one of four pacts established between Abu Dhabi-based entities and OpenAI, covering the government, energy, and investment sectors.

“Abu Dhabi and the UAE are setting a bold, global standard for AI integration across both the public and private sectors to make sure the benefits of AI reach everyone,” stated Mr. Altman. “We are proud to support the UAE’s ambition, anchored in a shared commitment to safety, accessibility and responsible innovation.”

In parallel, the Abu Dhabi government and OpenAI have launched the world's first AI-native Machine-Readable Government initiative. This initiative aligns with the emirate's vision to become the first fully AI-native government by converting government policies and regulations into a format that AI systems can interpret, thereby assisting officials with routine compliance tasks such as permit and certificate issuance. Oversight and accountability for final decisions remain with human officials.

The Department of Government Enablement is leading this initiative, with its initial pilot underway in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, focusing specifically on food imports.

Furthermore, Mubadala, Inception42, and OpenAI have entered into an agreement to apply AI in investment analysis, opportunity identification, and risk assessment. Inception42 and OpenAI have also committed to a five-year agreement aimed at supporting the adoption of frontier AI across the government, enterprise, and education sectors within the UAE.
