An increasing number of cobra sightings in Egypt's residential neighborhoods is causing significant alarm among the public. According to Mohamed Youssef, Head of the Central Administration for Nature Reserves at the Ministry of Environment, research indicates that the presence of dangerous animals in populated zones is often linked to environmental changes that displace them.
During an appearance on the program “Hadith al-Qahira” (Cairo Talk), Youssef emphasized that the emergence of wildlife in human-inhabited areas necessitates a thorough examination of the specific circumstances of each incident, cautioning against premature conclusions about the causes.
He explained that cobras are highly sensitive to their surrounding temperatures and may venture out in search of warmth, food, or shelter. Alterations in environmental conditions can compel these animals to abandon their natural habitats. Youssef advised citizens to remain vigilant and urged them not to approach or attempt to interact with a cobra if encountered. Instead, he stressed the importance of immediately contacting the appropriate authorities, such as the Civil Defense, emergency services, or the governorate’s operations center.
