In the high-altitude air of Mexico City, Andrea Kimi Antonelli finally allowed himself to breathe, tears of joy streaming as he was crowned Formula One world champion with four races still remaining in the 2026 season. The Italian secured his maiden title with a mere two points needed, finishing third on the podium. He was then lifted onto the shoulders of F1 legends Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, and Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time champion.

Antonelli's achievements are staggering. At just 20 years and 68 days old, he is the youngest champion in F1 history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel's record of 23 years and 134 days set in 2010. He also ends Italy's 73-year wait for a Formula One driver's title, becoming the first Italian to achieve this feat since Alberto Ascari in 1953, and remarkably, he did it in a car not manufactured in Italy.

While Mercedes undoubtedly built the dominant car of F1's new era, the machinery alone doesn't tell the whole story. George Russell, in an identical Mercedes, was considered a pre-season favorite for the championship. However, Antonelli arrived in Mexico with a commanding 123-point lead over his teammate, boasting nine Grand Prix victories, including an impressive five consecutive wins from China to Monaco. He has held the championship lead since the Japanese Grand Prix in March.

The transformation from his rookie season has been extraordinary. Last year, Antonelli showed flashes of brilliance but was also prone to errors, finishing seventh overall. Even at his home race in Monza, his team principal, Toto Wolff, described his performance as 'underwhelming.' Now, Wolff regards Antonelli's progress as one of the most surprising developments of his career.

The 2026 regulations played a role in Antonelli's success. The new cars, featuring narrower tires and reduced downforce, offer drivers less warning before losing grip, making the rear more susceptible to sliding. The critical moment often occurs during braking as a driver initiates a turn. As McLaren team principal Andrea Stella explained, overly smooth driving can cost time, a challenge Oscar Piastri faced this season. These cars, however, reward aggression, and Antonelli's daring style and instincts are perfectly suited to them. He attacks corners with late, sharp turn-ins, allowing the car to pivot quickly towards the exit, a technique he describes as 'folding the corner up like a handkerchief.' His precise, rapid steering adjustments help him manage slides without sacrificing speed, a technique particularly effective in slower corners, though he has adapted it for circuits like Barcelona and Silverstone.

In contrast, Russell's smoother, more measured driving style, which was highly effective in the previous era, has been more challenging to leverage this season. His preference for earlier throttle application puts greater stress on the rear tires, especially with this season's high tire pressures, and can lead to increased electrical energy consumption. Antonelli's aggressive approach, however, aided in managing rear-tire temperatures and, according to telemetry, allowed for more efficient energy use exiting corners, preserving battery power for the straights.

Beyond the technical aspects, Antonelli's temperament has been key. Wolff lauded the 'serenity and structure' Antonelli brought to his racing this year. While not immune to mistakes, such as repeated track-limit infringements that he needs to address, his raw pace has been outstanding.

Key victories underscored his dominance. In Shanghai, during only the second race of the season, Antonelli became the youngest pole-sitter in F1 history. He surrendered the lead to Lewis Hamilton at the start but fought back to dictate the race, becoming the first Italian to win a Grand Prix since Giancarlo Fisichella in 2006, five months before Antonelli was born. Wolff admitted, 'I think it’s maybe come earlier than I thought.' Antonelli's mother, Veronica, watched from Bologna, weeping alongside her family.

Monza in September was a masterclass. Despite starting 19th due to an engine change and subsequent grid penalty at his home race, Antonelli carved through the field, completing 26 overtakes. He ultimately passed Russell, who was on older tires, with three laps remaining to win. This victory made him the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. He was celebrated by the tifosi, even as a Mercedes driver, embodying a local hero.

His performance in Austin the previous week perfectly showcased his remarkable growth. Antonelli led by over two seconds after the first lap and maintained control throughout the race, prompting Wolff to call it 'probably the best race I’ve seen.' Wolff's belief in Antonelli has been unwavering. In early 2024, after Hamilton announced his move to Ferrari, Wolff decided within minutes to promote the then 17-year-old Antonelli, who hadn't yet started a Formula 2 race, to replace the seven-time world champion. Mercedes had been monitoring Antonelli since he was 11, alerted by Giovanni Minardi, son of the late Minardi team founder. Talent scout Gwen Lagrue also recognized his potential, and Antonelli joined the team's junior program in 2019.

He accumulated European karting championships, Italian and German Formula 4 titles, and two Formula Regional championships, bypassing Formula 3 entirely. Wolff emphasizes that raw speed is an unteachable quality, one that Antonelli possesses in abundance.

His F1 debut practice session at Monza in 2024 was eventful; after setting the fastest time on his first lap, he spun into the barriers. Nevertheless, the team confirmed him as Hamilton's successor the following day, their faith absolute. His father, Marco Antonelli, expressed his gratitude, stating, 'Toto did everything.' The name 'Kimi' might evoke Kimi Raikkonen, but Andrea Kimi Antonelli was not named after the Finnish driver. While known as Kimi in the paddock, he is Andrea or 'Andy' at home. Motorsport is in his blood; his father, a former touring car racer, runs his own team. Antonelli's mother, Veronica, felt the baby kick at the sound of racing engines while she was pregnant at a race in Magny-Cours. His father initially hoped for a different career for his son, aware of motorsport's harsh realities, and encouraged him towards football. However, Kimi's determination to race ultimately prevailed.

Although Antonelli secured the championship mathematically in Mexico City, the season will conclude at Yas Marina Circuit, the venue where he claimed one of his first major single-seater titles. In February 2023, at 16 years old, he was crowned the inaugural Formula Regional Middle East champion there. Now, on December 6, he returns as the youngest champion the sport has ever witnessed.
