Coventry City Football Club is investigating footage that appears to show one of its supporters mocking Sunderland fans with an image of the late Bradley Lowery during their Premier League match. Lowery, who tragically passed away at the age of six in July 2017, battled a rare and rapidly spreading form of cancer. He gained national recognition for accompanying the Sunderland team onto the pitch before games.

Reports indicate that a 14-year-old boy has turned himself in to West Midlands police. The investigation was launched after video evidence circulated on social media, allegedly depicting an individual in the Coventry section displaying a photo of Lowery on their phone and grinning during Sunderland’s 3-1 loss on Saturday.

“Coventry City FC is aware of footage circulating on social media in connection with an incident during our Premier League fixture against Sunderland,” the club stated on Sunday. “The club does not tolerate offensive behaviour and will liaise with the relevant authorities to determine the appropriate course of action.” Sunderland has yet to comment on the incident.

Gemma Lowery, Bradley’s mother, released a statement through the Bradley Lowery Foundation, an organization supporting children and families facing serious illnesses. “As his [Bradley’s] mam, this breaks my heart. Behind that photo is a little boy who was loved beyond measure,” she expressed. “To see such a beautiful memory used in such a cruel way really does break my heart. I hope the club takes appropriate action and the young lad’s family help him understand how hurtful his actions were.” She specifically requested that no hate be directed towards the individual, emphasizing her desire for him to learn from the experience.

Despite Gemma Lowery’s plea, social media users reacted with outrage to the “sickening” incident, calling for a lifetime ban for the supporter. The football community responded swiftly, with hundreds donating to the Bradley Lowery Foundation over the weekend. Many condemned the fan’s insensitive actions, while others shared poignant memories of Bradley’s courage during his cancer battle and his positive impact on the football community. Comments included praise for Coventry City, stating, “One bad fan doesn’t represent Coventry City. Keep up the great work in keeping the wee man’s memory alive and doing great work in supporting others,” and another noting, “Bradley has achieved what no-one else has and that’s bringing rival fans together.”
