Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is implementing a new monitoring system that will utilize cameras and smart sensors to track the speed, location, and driving behavior of delivery motorcycle riders. This initiative aims to identify dangerous riding practices, improve adherence to traffic rules, and ultimately enhance road safety across the emirate.
The system will meticulously monitor driving patterns, including sudden acceleration or braking, and analyze motorcycle routes. This data will empower authorities and delivery companies to pinpoint unsafe practices and optimize fleet management. This move is a key part of the RTA's ongoing efforts to bolster oversight of Dubai's rapidly expanding motorcycle delivery sector, which is experiencing a surge in demand.
Saeed Al Ramsi, director of licensing activities monitoring at the RTA, explained that the system integrates a digital platform, Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring devices, and advanced cameras installed on delivery motorcycles. "The new system marks a step-change in monitoring of delivery activity," he stated. "The system will gather and analyse data on driving indicators and on-road behaviour, including speed, sudden acceleration, harsh braking, driving patterns, location and route. This will allow operational performance to be tracked and unsafe practices to be detected with greater accuracy and efficiency."
The platform will offer delivery companies real-time insights into their fleets and riders, enabling them to promptly identify issues and implement corrective measures. Mr. Al Ramsi highlighted that this initiative represents a shift from traditional monitoring methods to a more proactive, data-driven approach to regulating delivery operations. Developed in collaboration with Dubai Police and other relevant authorities, the system is designed to improve safety while simultaneously boosting operational efficiency for companies.
Furthermore, the system will furnish companies with operational data to evaluate driving habits, refine fleet management strategies, and develop targeted training and awareness programs for riders. Mr. Al Ramsi emphasized that these measures are intended to foster safer riding practices and enhance compliance with traffic regulations. He also noted that the success of this initiative hinges on effective cooperation among regulatory authorities, delivery companies, and motorcycle riders.
The installation of monitoring devices and their connection to the platform will be optional until the end of the first half of 2027, providing companies with a grace period to adapt their technical systems and operations. Following this transition period, the changes will become mandatory, with the RTA committed to supporting delivery companies and other relevant authorities throughout the implementation process.
The RTA anticipates that the system will generate a comprehensive database of delivery operations, which will be instrumental in refining regulatory policies, intensifying field inspections, and encouraging companies to adopt safer and more sustainable practices. This launch is integral to the RTA's broader strategy of leveraging smart technologies and data analytics to elevate road safety, strengthen regulatory oversight, and improve service standards across Dubai's transport and delivery sectors.
