After an extraordinary 28-year odyssey spanning 50,000 kilometers (31,070 miles), British adventurer Karl Bushby has finally returned to his childhood home in Hull, northeastern England. Surrounded by media and a throng of well-wishers, Bushby, 57, was warmly embraced by his mother, Angela, outside her terraced house on November 2, 2026.

The journey, known as the Goliath Expedition, commenced in Punta Arenas, southern Chile, in November 1998. Bushby's ambitious goal was to reach his home city via an unbroken route, eschewing any motorized transport for his travels. His path led him north through the Americas, across the frozen Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia, and onward through Mongolia and China. He also navigated the challenging Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama and swam across the Caspian Sea before continuing his trek towards Europe.

The expedition was not without its significant hurdles. Bushby faced detentions upon entering Russia, along with persistent visa and funding issues. The global financial crisis of 2008 severely impacted his major sponsors, contributing to delays that transformed his anticipated 12-year journey into a nearly three-decade-long endeavor.

Just last month, Bushby conquered his final major obstacle by swimming across the English Channel, paving the way for his triumphant return to Hull. Hundreds of cheering supporters greeted him in the city center before he completed the final leg of his remarkable journey. "Sorry to keep you waiting," he quipped to the assembled crowd.

Reflecting on his achievement, Bushby stated, "They say it takes a village, but literally it took a world to get me here. The kindness of strangers, so many, from individuals to nation-states, to get me back here today. I didn’t do this alone. There was a big team. The biggest team. Earth." A feature-length documentary chronicling his epic walk is currently in production, and Bushby is planning a speaking tour across England in the upcoming weeks.
