The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially confirmed the postponement of the 2027 Asian Cup, originally slated for early next year in Saudi Arabia. The decision comes as a result of escalating regional security concerns. The prestigious quadrennial tournament was scheduled to be held in the kingdom from January 7 to February 5. The 24-team competition has now been rescheduled to take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the AFC stated that its Organising Committee for the AFC Asian Cup approved the rescheduling of the flagship national team tournament. This decision was made in light of current exceptional circumstances arising from regional developments, which have led to substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions. The new dates will be presented to Fifa for approval. The AFC emphasized that these exceptional circumstances have significantly impacted the organization and delivery of the competition as originally planned, making the postponement necessary for the benefit of all participating teams, officials, spectators, and other stakeholders.
This postponement occurs just a week after the AFC had initially confirmed that the tournament would proceed as planned. It follows a recent escalation in the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels based in Yemen. Houthi rebels have conducted numerous drone and missile attacks on the kingdom in recent weeks. King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, in particular, has been targeted at least 20 times over an 11-day period, resulting in at least 17 fatalities and over 300 injuries.
Riyadh, designated to host five of the eight stadiums for the Asian Cup, was set to stage 30 of the tournament's 51 matches, including the final at King Fahd Sports City Stadium. The disruptions in travel and security concerns have also impacted other sporting events in Saudi Arabia. Golf's Asian Tour has postponed the Saudi International indefinitely, and the cycling Urban World Championships have been cancelled. In September, the final round of the World Rally Championship was relocated from Saudi Arabia to Italy. The Six Kings Slam exhibition tennis tournament in Riyadh has been moved from October to December. Additionally, several high-profile football matches have been postponed, including last month's AFC Champions League Elite match between Saudi champions Al Nassr and UAE club Al Wasl in Riyadh, due to travel concerns.
