A devastating collision between two helicopters in Nepal's Mount Everest region has resulted in the death of at least one individual and left two others injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday as both aircraft were in the process of landing near Mount Everest base camp, the staging point for expeditions on the world's tallest mountain above sea level.
Disturbing footage shared online depicts over a dozen people fleeing for safety as the helicopters crashed to the ground following the mid-air impact. Authorities have confirmed the fatality of a 47-year-old Indian national. A national from New Zealand and a pilot from Nepal sustained injuries in the crash. The exact number of people on board the two helicopters remains unconfirmed.
The crash took place in Pheriche village, situated at an altitude of 4,200 metres (13,780 feet). The Mount Everest region presents significant navigational challenges due to the absence of roads, making helicopters a crucial mode of transport for evacuating trekkers and guides facing medical emergencies or severe exhaustion.
This incident follows a separate event last week where a fire broke out at a hotel along the route to Mount Everest base camp. Efforts to combat that blaze were hindered by heavy snowfall, though no casualties were reported.
