Following the conclusion of the T20 series, India and New Zealand are set to engage in the most critical phase of their all-format tour: a five-match ODI series commencing on Wednesday. This series holds significant importance as it serves as a crucial test for both teams with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon. The conditions in Auckland are anticipated to mirror those expected in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia next year, making it an ideal preparation ground.

While India, having dominated major multi-team tournaments since 2024, might appear as favorites on paper, New Zealand possesses distinct advantages. These include home-field advantage, a match-ready squad, and a superior track record in longer formats of the game.

Advantage New Zealand

Despite losing the T20 leg of the tour 3-2 to India, and suffering a significant defeat in the 20-over World Cup final in Ahmedabad earlier in the year, New Zealand has historically performed better in longer formats. Their dominance was evident in late 2024 when they swept India 3-0 in a Test series at home, ending over a decade of Indian invincibility. This trend continued in the ODI format, with New Zealand clinching the 50-over series in India at the start of the year, though India did secure a victory in the 2025 ODI Champions Trophy final in Dubai.

Daryl Mitchell has been central to New Zealand's batting success in bilateral series, boasting an average of nearly 75 against India, with four of his nine ODI centuries coming against them. Glenn Phillips is in even better form, having scored 341 runs in the T20 series at a strike rate of 185.

New Zealand's pace bowling attack, featuring Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy, also inspires confidence. The bowlers managed to contain India's formidable batting lineup effectively after an explosive start in the T20s. The fact that much of New Zealand's bowling and batting unit participated in the T20s means they are well-prepared and in the right mindset for the ODIs, having won the last two T20 contests.

India's Top Spot on the Line

India has shown inconsistent performances in formats other than T20s. This New Zealand series will be a key indicator of their readiness for the World Cup, which is less than a year away. While captain Shubman Gill, veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul provide experience, the bowling department appears somewhat thin. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is being rested for the Test series, leaving Mohammad Siraj to lead the fast bowlers. Gill will be looking for contributions from Anshul Kamboj, Aaqib Nabi, and Gurnoor Brar to solidify the lineup as time runs out to find alternatives for a bowling attack that was once considered invincible during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The Indian team is also keenly aware of their ODI rankings. Currently holding the top spot with 115 points, they are closely followed by New Zealand at 109 points. A series victory for New Zealand in the first three matches would see them overtake India in the rankings. A 4-1 series win for the Kiwis would further cement their position as the number one ODI side.

Last Hurrah?

This series holds sentimental value as it is likely the final time fans in New Zealand will witness Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing together in international cricket on their soil. With both veterans expected to retire after the 2027 World Cup, this Antipodean tour represents their last opportunity to play in blue in the region. The high demand for tickets, driven by the desire to see these legends one last time, is projected to help New Zealand Cricket generate a surplus of approximately $6 million, thereby clearing a running deficit.
