Erbil security forces announced on Tuesday the apprehension of a suspected smuggler. This individual is accused of facilitating a family's perilous journey from Sulaymaniyah to Turkey, a trip that ended tragically when their inflatable boat capsized while attempting to reach Greece. Three young children—Hastyar, aged 12, nine-year-old Haryad, and five-year-old Mela—lost their lives after the vessel sank off the coast of Edirne, Turkey, on October 14. The family of five was part of a larger group of eight individuals attempting to cross into Greece illegally.
According to the security forces, their investigation identified the alleged smuggler, known only as RAM. He was arrested upon his return to the Kurdistan Region under a judicial order. The children's father, Harem Mohammed, informed the local Kurdish outlet Rudaw that the family had paid $55,000, intended for the smugglers upon their arrival in Germany. He recounted that the boat appeared alarmingly small for the eight passengers, two smugglers, and their luggage.
Greece serves as a primary entry point into Europe for migrants traveling from Turkey, with thousands undertaking the hazardous voyage across the Aegean Sea or attempting to cross the land border at Evros. Greek government figures indicate that over 13,500 people arrived via Greece's eastern Aegean Islands and the Evros border area between January and September of this year. Iraqi Kurds commonly enter Turkey using legal visas before continuing their journey through illicit routes, often facilitated by smugglers based in their home region.
Kurdish authorities have intensified their crackdown on smuggling networks. A trial commenced in Erbil in October for a suspected smuggler implicated in an attempted English Channel crossing in November 2021, an incident that resulted in 31 fatalities. In January 2025, security forces, in collaboration with the UK's National Crime Agency, arrested three men in Sulaymaniyah for their alleged involvement in organizing yacht journeys to Greece and Italy. Many individuals embark on these journeys seeking better life or employment opportunities in Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom. The National has uncovered connections between smuggling networks in Iraqi Kurdistan and criminal organizations operating within Europe. These people-smuggling networks in the Kurdish region have orchestrated journeys through Turkey and other transit countries, with migrants paying substantial sums to reach Europe. Increased enforcement on established routes has compelled smugglers to adapt their methods. Kurdish authorities are actively cooperating with UK and French authorities in efforts to curb migration across the English Channel.
