US markets experienced a significant upward trend following the Democratic Party's decisive victory in the midterm elections, securing control of both the House and the Senate on Tuesday. The Nasdaq composite index opened on Wednesday with a 1 percent gain, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 1.8 percent, and the S&P 500 climbed 1.1 percent shortly after markets opened at 9:30 am ET (14:30 GMT).

Retail companies heavily reliant on imports, such as Walmart and Target, saw their stock prices increase by 1.3 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively. This rise is attributed to potential shifts in tariff policies. In contrast, health insurance provider UnitedHealthcare experienced a decline of 2.9 percent, and CVS Health dropped by 12 percent. However, Cigna bucked the trend, with its stock going up by 1.6 percent.

Investor confidence was further bolstered by a statement from United States President Donald Trump, who indicated his acceptance of the election results. This eased political uncertainty, thereby reducing pressure on the markets.

The outlook for companies involved in artificial intelligence (AI) development presents a different scenario, as Democrats have historically shown more critical stances towards the sector. Both Oracle and Nvidia opened the trading day lower. Conversely, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, showed positive momentum, with its stock up 3.5 percent at the opening bell.

Dan Ives, managing partner at Yorkville Ives, commented on the situation, stating, "There is no way to sugarcoat that Democrats taking control, especially over the Senate, will create some major hurdles for AI and tech legislation in the Beltway over the next two years." He further estimated that "10% of datacenters will not happen now." Democrats demonstrated strong performance in states with significant AI development, including Ohio, where Sherrod Brown secured the Senate seat; Texas, where Democrats gained a Senate seat with James Talarico; and the governor's race, which Gina Hinojosa won, also flipping the seat.

Oil prices are also experiencing a downward trend. The global benchmark Brent crude oil futures decreased by $3.20, or 3.09 percent, to settle at $100.40 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate crude fell by $3.01, or 3.13 percent, to $93.08 a barrel. While these movements are reacting to the midterm election outcomes, investors are also closely monitoring potential peace talks regarding the conflicts in Iran and between Russia and Ukraine, following a previous session where oil prices reached their lowest point in four weeks.
