Oil prices experienced a significant decline on Wednesday, reaching their lowest point in nearly two months. This downturn occurred as the market awaited clarity on the US-Iran relationship following the Democratic Party's decisive victories in the US midterm elections. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell by 8.47 percent to $94.83 per barrel by 8:58 PM UAE time. West Texas Intermediate, the US crude benchmark, also saw a decrease of 7.5 percent, closing at $88.88 per barrel. Both benchmarks have now dropped over 15 percent this week.

The US midterm elections resulted in the Democratic Party securing control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This outcome has introduced further uncertainty into President Donald Trump's agenda, particularly concerning the future direction of the conflict with Iran. Observers view these election results as a reflection of American voters' dissatisfaction with high inflation and escalating gas prices, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict.

Aliasgar Tambawala, co-chief investment officer at Klay Group, a Dubai-based financial services firm, suggested that oil prices might stabilize if expectations of reduced US military involvement in Iran grow. He noted, "Sustained progress towards de-escalation and improved security around the Strait of Hormuz would reinforce this relief." Tambawala also indicated that such developments could lessen the pressure for further interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. The US central bank had previously decided to maintain interest rates after increasing them in September in an effort to curb rising inflation.

The drop in crude prices occurred despite Washington's confirmation of conducting limited strikes on Iran's Qeshm island on Monday. Tehran, conversely, reported intercepting drones in the vicinity. While negotiations between Washington and Tehran have resumed, with mediators including Qatar and Pakistan, no definitive signals regarding future actions have emerged. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly expressed that those anticipating a shift in US policy towards Iran post-midterm elections were "gravely mistaken." Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei cautioned Washington against further military action, asserting that Iran would not be intimidated by threats or aggression.
