Premier League champions Arsenal have bolstered their defensive options by securing England international Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth £51m ($69m). The 28-year-old defender has put pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Gunners, just hours ahead of their opening league fixture against Coventry on Friday.

Konsa's arrival provides Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta with a crucial boost as the club sets its sights on defending the Premier League title. Having featured regularly for England at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Konsa is slated to partner Gabriel Magalhaes in the centre of the Arsenal defence. This reinforcement is especially vital given that William Saliba is sidelined for several months due to a back injury, while Jurrien Timber continues to recover from a long-term groin problem.

Expressing his excitement, Konsa said, “It’s a privilege to be here and I can’t wait to get started. I want to keep winning, I’m hungry to win and that’s what I’m here for.” He could potentially make his debut against his former club when Arsenal visit Aston Villa on August 31.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta praised the new signing's capabilities, noting, “Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers.”

Konsa joins other notable recruits at the Emirates Stadium, including Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, and Illan Meslier, alongside Piero Hincapie, whose loan from Bayer Leverkusen was made permanent. Prior to the transfer, Konsa held discussions with international teammates Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka, which helped persuade him to make the switch. After arriving from Brentford in 2019, Konsa made nearly 300 appearances for Aston Villa, helping them secure a Europa League victory last season and top-four finishes in two of the past three campaigns.
