First Lady Melania Trump is set to host representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House this Thursday, following an announcement of a ceasefire in the city of Oleshky last month. The First Lady's office stated on Tuesday that Melania Trump will personally bring together representatives of Russia and Ukraine, two nations currently engaged in active conflict, highlighting this as an "unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American first lady."

Ukraine's ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova are scheduled to attend the meeting, according to both Ukrainian and Russian authorities. Lubinets and Lantratova have met previously, most recently during the Oleshky ceasefire last week. While neither has been involved in high-level negotiations with US delegations before, officials with negotiation experience are expected to accompany them. The Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday that Lantratova would be joined by Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin and an experienced negotiator. Ukrainian media reported that lawmaker and negotiator David Arakhamia would accompany Lubinets.

Speaking to CNN en route to Washington D.C., Dmitriev expressed his strong belief in cooperation between the US and Russia as a key motivator in his work as an interlocutor. "I’m focused on US-Russia relations in general and if there’s a humanitarian situation to solve, I’m always trying to help," he stated. Marc Beckman, senior adviser to the First Lady, recently thanked Dmitriev for his "leadership in establishing and sustaining the ceasefire in Oleshky." Last month, US special envoy Steve Witkoff credited Dmitriev with playing a significant role in the release of Stephen Hubbard, a US citizen classified by the US State Department as "wrongfully detained."

Melania Trump, who will also deliver remarks regarding the limited ceasefire, has maintained a lower profile during her husband's second term. Despite eschewing some traditional roles, she has actively engaged in substantive policy work behind the scenes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday that he had awarded the First Lady the Order of Princess Olga, a Ukrainian civil decoration, in recognition of her "significant personal contributions" to humanitarian support for Ukraine and her "active human rights and charitable work aimed at rescuing Ukrainian children and citizens."

On October 23, Trump announced that she had secured a localized ceasefire to facilitate the humane evacuation of elderly residents from Oleshky. This ceasefire, which began on October 27 and concluded on Sunday, resulted in the evacuation of hundreds of people back to Ukraine. Trump shared on X that the mission was successful, delivering critical aid and enabling the evacuation of nearly 800 people, expressing hope that Oleshky "serves as a foundation for lasting peace between both nations." The First Lady's office noted that the dire humanitarian situation in Oleshky, where residents were reportedly forced to consume grass and weeds due to lack of necessities, came to her attention during a private discussion at the 81st United Nations General Assembly. CNN had previously reported that Pope Leo discussed the Oleshky crisis with Russian President Vladimir Putin in early October while recovering from surgery, with the Kremlin stating Putin "supported" the Vatican's efforts.
