A Texas appeals court has significantly reduced a defamation fine levied against right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones over his false claims that the tragic 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school mass shooting was a hoax.
In a unanimous decision on Friday, the Texas Third Court of Appeals lowered a $50m judgment down to $1.5m. The court determined that parents Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis—whose six-year-old son was among the 20 children and six staff members killed in the massacre—failed to present sufficient evidence of harassment to overcome the state's $750,000 cap on damages.
Mark Bankston, an attorney representing Heslin and Lewis in Texas, downplayed the decision. "The families care not at all about this irrelevant ruling which affects only two of the 19 claims they all share. Jones still faces over a billion dollars of liability, so this changes absolutely nothing. All it does is highlight the absurdity of Texas law," Bankston stated.
This ruling does not impact a separate legal judgment in Connecticut requiring Jones to pay $1.25bn for falsely claiming the shooting was a government-orchestrated hoax designed to promote gun control. Jones previously used his Infowars platform to push these fabricated allegations, which subjected grieving families to severe abuse, death threats, and forced relocations.
Following bankruptcy filings and the surrender of the Infowars brand in April, Jones continues broadcasting online and posting via the social media platform X. Celebrating the court's decision, Jones labeled it a "gigantic victory for the First Amendment" and announced plans to appeal further to the Texas state Supreme Court.
