A stabbing attack in Jordan's capital, Amman, has resulted in one fatality and one injury. The Public Security Directorate of Jordan announced that one of its force members was attacked with a sharp object and died in what they described as a "cowardly terrorist attack" on Thursday. According to Jordan's state-run Al-Mamlaka TV, the assailant attempted to disarm the slain security officer. A second security officer intervened, sustaining injuries along with the attacker, Al-Mamlaka reported. The attacker has since been apprehended.

A preliminary investigation by the Public Security Directorate suggests the attacker had been planning the terrorist act against officers of the General Security Directorate. Al Jazeera's correspondent in Amman noted that following the incident, both the injured security officer and the assailant were taken to the hospital. Authorities have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman confirmed that the attack occurred in its vicinity, as reported by the Associated Press news agency. This incident follows a deadly church attack in southern Jordan weeks prior, where gunmen killed nine people and wounded dozens more. It remains unclear if the stabbing is connected to the church attack.

King Abdullah of Jordan had previously stated on Monday that "terrorists" would not be permitted to jeopardize the country's unity and security, following the church attack which prompted Jordanian strikes in Syria.
