Mourners gathered in Navahermosa, central Spain, on Thursday to pay their respects at the funeral of CD Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel. The service was attended by prominent figures from the Spanish football world, including the national team coach and the president of Real Madrid, alongside family, friends, and teammates.
The funeral was held in Navahermosa, a small town of approximately 3,000 residents, reportedly the birthplace of De Miguel’s parents. A hearse adorned with flowers proceeded slowly towards the church, followed by dozens of mourners, some carrying candles. The town hall observed three days of mourning, with flags flown at half-staff.
De Miguel, aged 30, tragically passed away on Tuesday after suffering cardiac arrest. This occurred following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a second-division match on Monday, while challenging for a high ball. He died in hospital the following day.
Spain's national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, and Real Madrid President, Florentino Perez, were present at the funeral. De la Fuente expressed that the football community is united in its grief.
In line with protocol, police have initiated a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter to determine if the challenge exceeded the bounds of normal play. Tributes have flooded in from football clubs across Europe, with De Miguel's death being described as a rare and deeply shocking tragedy within professional football.
Images from the funeral showed mourners accompanying the coffin, De Miguel's mother in attendance, the flower-draped funeral car arriving at the church, and the arrival of notable figures such as Luis de la Fuente and Florentino Perez, as well as CD Tenerife players.
Spanish police sources confirmed to AFP news agency that an investigation has been launched into the incident. De Miguel's teammates from CD Tenerife had traveled from the Canary Islands to attend the service.
