A six-year-old girl has tragically passed away in hospital, just days after her parents and sister drowned off the south coast of England at Shoreham-by-Sea.
Saja El-Khawas was rescued from the water and remained in a critical condition before passing away on Friday, according to a law firm representing the hospital and a Palestinian group.
Her parents, Hassan El-Khawas, 55, and Zeina El-Khawas, 37, alongside her sister Sara El-Khawas, 14, were pulled from the sea by a lifeboat on Tuesday. Despite rescue efforts, they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Sussex Police confirmed that the deaths are being treated as a tragic accident with no third-party involvement.
According to the Palestinian embassy in the UK, Mr. Al Khawas was born in the Rashidieh refugee camp in Lebanon, and all family members held British citizenship. Nehad Khanfar, head of the Association of Palestinians Communities in the UK, stated that the family was well established and active within the British Palestinian community.
Mr. Al Khawas's remaining family members are currently receiving support from close friends and relatives, with extended family located in Lebanon.
Sara El Khawas was a student at Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls in Ealing, west London. The school released an online statement paying tribute to her, describing Sara as a sweet girl who was well-liked by both staff and students and who will be greatly missed by the school community.
