Australia has secured the expertise of Mike Hussey as a long-term consultant coach, aiming to address the team's batting vulnerabilities. The former Australian batsman was appointed on Friday to guide the national team through the upcoming Ashes series against England and the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

Hussey had previously been approached by England's new red-ball coach, Stephen Fleming, to serve as their Test batting mentor, but he declined the offer to commit to his home nation. His role will be crucial in helping Australia overcome a recent batting slump, evidenced by their 2-1 Test series defeat in South Africa.

Known as "Mr Cricket" for his exceptional technical knowledge, Hussey will also lend his coaching assistance during the current T20 series against England and the subsequent four-Test series against New Zealand. His involvement extends to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket is set to feature, and the 2028 T20 World Cup.

"I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years," said Hussey, who represented Australia in over 300 matches across all formats. "This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period."

Hussey brings extensive coaching experience, having worked with both Australia and England. He was part of England's coaching staff when they won the 2022 T20 World Cup and served as the Chennai Super Kings' longtime batting coach under Fleming in the Indian Premier League. He also managed Welsh Fire in this year's The Hundred.

Australian head coach Andrew McDonald commented, "Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players. Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, countries invaluable, so are his qualities as a person."
