Russian forces have launched a missile attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, according to the city's mayor. This comes as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned of impending Russian assaults on energy targets, bridges, and other critical infrastructure in his nightly address. Debris from the Saturday attack impacted a residential building, stated Mayor Vitali Klitschko. He reported on Telegram that "Explosions in the Kyiv suburbs. The enemy is hitting infrastructure with ballistic missiles." Klitschko further specified that debris struck a five-storey apartment building in a western district, and the facade of another residential building sustained damage. The city's military administration confirmed on Telegram that two individuals were injured and a kindergarten building was damaged. Officials continued to issue warnings to residents about the possibility of further strikes hours after the initial attack.
These attacks occur as President Zelenskyy indicated his government is pursuing specific security guarantees from Western allies regarding post-war support. These remarks were made in an interview aired late Thursday, following two days of discussions in Brussels among allies. The Brussels talks addressed post-war reconstruction, funding for the upcoming year, and security assurances to be backed by Ukraine's Western allies. Participants included officials from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the European Union, alongside representatives from the World Bank and the US investment group BlackRock, as noted by Ukrainian lead negotiator Rustem Umerov in an online post.
The attacks preceded US-led Ukrainian-Russian talks scheduled to commence in Abu Dhabi, aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing four-year conflict. The previous round of such talks took place in February. Earlier on Thursday, US President Donald Trump suggested a potential resolution between Russia and Ukraine might be near, following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, at the White House. Trump stated he did not meet with the Ukrainian delegation on Thursday. This meeting between President Trump and Dmitriev coincided with First Lady Melania Trump hosting a diplomatic gathering with Russian and Ukrainian representatives to acknowledge and build upon a localized truce she helped broker in October in the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky. That truce expired last Sunday, one day prior to a Russian bombing of an aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhia region. Ukraine's Emergency Service reported on Friday that the death toll from that attack had risen to 50, marking it as one of the deadliest strikes on civilians this year.
