Carlos Alcaraz has once again delivered a remarkable performance in Paris, fending off two match points to defeat Taylor Fritz and secure his spot in the Paris Masters semifinals on Friday. The 23-year-old Spaniard staged a dramatic comeback to win the quarterfinal match 6-7 (10/12), 7-5, 6-3, marking his first appearance in the last four of the event.
Alcaraz is set to face former world number two Casper Ruud in the semifinals on Saturday. Ruud advanced after eliminating Nuno Borges, a lucky loser from Portugal, with a score of 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.
The victory drew parallels to Alcaraz's memorable French Open final comeback against Jannik Sinner last season, where he saved three championship points. In Paris, he once again captivated the crowd with an improbable escape from a losing position. "Probably this match is going to be one of the most special matches that I ever played, and I’m going to remember this match for a long time," Alcaraz shared with reporters.
Despite having played only one match prior to the quarterfinals, Alcaraz showed no signs of rust. He capitalized on his first break opportunity in the fifth game of the opening set with a forehand passing shot past Fritz. However, his serve faltered, allowing Fritz to break back and level the score at 5-5. In a tense tie-break, both players had chances to close out the set, but Alcaraz ultimately conceded the opener after a forehand error.
In the second set, after saving break points early on, Alcaraz rallied the Parisian crowd. Despite facing challenges breaking Fritz's serve, the American secured a break in the seventh game. Alcaraz managed to save a match point and then held serve with a sensational backhand slice, keeping his hopes alive. "After that game… I started to enjoy it because I just thought I pulled off great shots, great points; I started to smile; I started to bring the energy from the people to the match," the former world number one commented.
A brilliant passing shot saved a second match point in the subsequent game. Alcaraz then broke back and completed his comeback by breaking Fritz again to force a decider.
The momentum shifted decisively in the third set, with Alcaraz taking a 3-1 lead when Fritz missed a volley. Although Alcaraz had to save break points in a closely contested match, he eventually created two match points on his own serve, converting the first with a powerful forehand that Fritz could not return.
In other news, Ben Shelton also advanced to the semifinals after defeating Tommy Paul in an all-American quarterfinal. The defeats for Paul and Fritz ended their chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals. Frances Tiafoe and Rafael Jodar are now set to make their ATP Finals debuts.
