Luka Doncic delivered a spectacular 53-point performance, guiding the Los Angeles Lakers to a 124-118 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in NBA Cup group-stage play on Friday. The win overshadowed LeBron James's return to Cleveland, which ended in a 119-95 defeat for his Philadelphia 76ers team.

Doncic's offensive explosion helped the Lakers overcome an early deficit, as they trailed by as many as 16 points in the second quarter. A remarkable shot from beyond half-court by Doncic just before halftime narrowed the gap to seven and ignited the Lakers' second-half comeback. Despite the Trail Blazers closing within four points in the final minute, Doncic's clutch floater secured the Lakers' fourth consecutive win.

This marks the sixth time in his last seven games that Doncic has scored at least 40 points. He now joins Lakers legends Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, and George Mikan as the only players in franchise history to achieve 40 or more points in four consecutive regular-season contests. "I'm having a lot of fun," Doncic commented, also contributing five rebounds and five assists. "Obviously playing basketball, it's a lot of fun for me. It's more [fun] when you play like this and when you win games." This 11th career 50-point game for Doncic was his fourth with the Lakers, placing him in a tie with Mikan for fourth most in franchise history, surpassing LeBron James.

Meanwhile, LeBron James, who departed the Lakers for the Philadelphia 76ers in June, faced his former city of Cleveland. The Cavaliers spoiled his homecoming with a decisive 119-95 victory, ending Philadelphia's five-game winning streak. James, who was a rumored target for a return to Cleveland before signing with Philadelphia, received a mixed reception of cheers and boos upon his introduction.

In his 24th NBA season at age 41, James, a four-time NBA champion, was acknowledged with cheers as he exited the game late in the fourth quarter. However, his offensive performance was notably subdued. James struggled, finishing with just eight points on three-of-12 shooting, along with seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and six turnovers. Star center Joel Embiid also had a difficult night, missing all nine of his field goal attempts and scoring six points solely from free throws. Jaylen Brown led the Sixers with 20 points, but the Cavaliers maintained control throughout the game, with Donovan Mitchell scoring 23 points and Evan Mobley adding 22. Cleveland also outrebounded Philadelphia 56-42, despite the absence of center Jarrett Allen due to injury.

"I did not feel in a good rhythm offensively," James admitted post-game. "We didn't look like much offensively. We had a couple of spurts. We were able to cut [the deficit] to three in the third quarter. But too many turnovers on my behalf."

Friday's matchups were part of the NBA Cup group stage, with tournament quarterfinals scheduled for December 4-5, semifinals on December 8-9, and the final on December 11.

In other NBA action, the Boston Celtics dominated the Charlotte Hornets with a 119-80 victory, fueled by 24 three-pointers. Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 34 points. The San Antonio Spurs, led by Victor Wembanyama's 30 points and 14 rebounds, defeated the Sacramento Kings 124-109. The Oklahoma City Thunder continued their strong performance against the Memphis Grizzlies, winning 128-97, with Ajay Mitchell scoring a career-high 35 points and Shai Gilge-Alexander adding 28, despite several key players being sidelined.
