Defending champion Elena Rybakina, the world number one from Kazakhstan, has withdrawn from the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, citing a viral illness. This decision allows Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine to take her place in the prestigious eight-player tournament. Organizers confirmed the withdrawal on Saturday, stating that Rybakina was not physically ready to compete and needed time to recover from a demanding year.

Tournament director Garbine Muguruza, a former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion, expressed her understanding, having spoken with Rybakina. "We love Elena, and we know that she was feeling so-so in Tokyo as well," Muguruza told Reuters. "I spoke to her today, and she really couldn’t recover on time. What we want is for her to feel good, to go rest, to recover. We don’t want her to feel like she has to play — only if she’s ready to." Rybakina had previously withdrawn from the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo last month due to a neck injury.

Despite Rybakina's absence, Muguruza emphasized the strength of the remaining field. "We have the best players," she stated. "I know our world number one is not going to be able to play, but we have an amazing field, the very best. Every match could be a Grand Slam final. You really need to be ready. You cannot give one inch."

Marta Kostyuk, who was already in Indian Wells as an alternate, steps into the main draw after a breakthrough season that included a title in Madrid and a rise into the top 10. Muguruza praised Kostyuk, noting her earned opportunity and exciting breakthrough year, which contributes to a strong contingent of first-time WTA Finals players.

The tournament will also support players' personal decisions regarding interactions with Russian or Belarusian opponents, a stance highlighted by Kostyuk's outspokenness regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "They’re free to do whatever they feel. We are open and supporting them," Muguruza confirmed.

Rybakina's withdrawal could present an opportunity for world number two Aryna Sabalenka to gain ground in the rankings. Sabalenka, who won the Indian Wells title earlier this year, has a chance to close the gap at the top. Muguruza also mentioned Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva as a player who performs well in Indian Wells.

The WTA Finals were relocated to Indian Wells from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, due to player safety concerns amid conflict in the Middle East. Muguruza stated that the decision was made because it "clearly felt no longer safe to be in a region where there is conflict." The move to Indian Wells has been well-received by players and has seen strong ticket sales.
