Dubai Municipality has launched a fully electric waste collection lorry, marking a significant step in its commitment to sustainability and enhancing the quality of life within the emirate. This initiative underscores the municipality's dedication to safeguarding the urban environment, as announced by the Dubai Media Office on Sunday. The introduction of this eco-friendly vehicle aligns with the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, which sets ambitious targets to reduce waste generation by 18 per cent and achieve a 100 per cent diversion of waste from landfills by the year 2041.
The new electric lorry boasts a range of up to 150 kilometres on a single charge, powered by three lithium-ion batteries that collectively weigh approximately 2.2 tonnes. Saeed Safar, director of the Waste Operations Department at Dubai Municipality, stated, "Dubai Municipality is committed to developing an integrated and sustainable waste management ecosystem that supports the transition towards a circular economy, reduces reliance on conventional vehicles, improves energy efficiency and lowers emissions." He further added, "The introduction of electric vehicles into waste collection and transport operations represents a practical step towards adopting clean and innovative technologies in daily operations, further strengthening Dubai's position as a leading global city in sustainability, innovation and quality of life."
