The FBI has officially returned dozens of looted artifacts to representatives of the Egyptian government during a ceremony held on Friday in Los Angeles, as reported by RT. The repatriated items include precious jewelry, statues, sculptures, amulets, funerary objects, and ancient inscriptions. According to the FBI, these pieces date across the Pharaonic, Roman, and Coptic periods.
Patrick Grandy, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, stated that authentication was achieved through the assistance of the US State Department, archaeological experts, and the FBI’s legal attaché in Cairo, confirming that all 48 items rightfully belonged to Egypt. Grandy noted that while the suspected smuggler of the artifacts has passed away, the investigation remains active as authorities continue working to identify potential accomplices and locate other illegally obtained cultural objects.
Hossam Ali, the Egyptian Consul General in Los Angeles, expressed deep gratitude during the event. “These artifacts that have been returned represent an essential part of Egypt’s history, cultural heritage, and people, and we are extremely happy and proud to bring them home,” Ali said, adding that Egypt anticipates continued robust bilateral cooperation in cultural preservation and other fields.
Authorities emphasize that the illicit trafficking of cultural property serves as a funding mechanism for transnational criminal and terrorist organizations while damaging the US art and antiquities market. A formal agreement on cultural property was signed between the US and Egypt in 2016, enabling the US to restrict imports of specific archaeological and ethnological materials. Officials noted that this framework facilitates the identification, seizure, and return of smuggled items while supporting legal cultural and scientific exchanges. Over the past decade, US law enforcement agencies have successfully returned more than 5,000 archaeological and cultural artifacts to Egypt.
