Emirates and Ryanair engaged in a witty social media exchange after the Irish low-cost carrier mocked the Dubai airline's new economy class headrests. The playful banter began when Emirates posted images of its U-Dream Headrest on X, highlighting the adjustable design in upright and folded configurations with the caption, "Headrest down and ready for take-off."

Ryanair's response was brief and blunt, simply stating, "hate it" alongside an edited image of its mascot seated in one of the Emirates chairs. Emirates fired back by sharing Ryanair's post with the caption, "Looks like someone's enjoying the legroom..." The lighthearted exchange quickly drew online attention, with users joining in to joke about the vastly different passenger experiences provided by the two carriers.

Known for its irreverent social media presence, Ryanair frequently pokes fun at itself, its passengers, and its competitors. Airline social media rivalries are not uncommon; previously, British Airways and Norwegian made a social media wager ahead of a Fifa World Cup quarter-final between England and Norway, with Norwegian ultimately changing its Instagram profile picture to the British Airways logo following England's 2-1 victory. Ryanair has also previously targeted British Airways, sending a copy of Geography for Dummies after a BA flight accidentally landed in Edinburgh due to a navigational error.

The focal point of Ryanair's latest joke, the Emirates U-Dream Headrest, was unveiled in July after an initial look at the unique design went viral. Integrated into Emirates' Safran Seats Z400 economy seating, the leather headrest includes padded side wings designed to fold inward to support passengers' heads and necks during sleep. Adjustable vertically and horizontally to fit various heights, the headrests have been independently tested and certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.

"The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep, by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed," stated Emirates president Tim Clark during the product launch. These innovative headrests are already present on select Airbus A350 aircraft, with plans for a wider rollout across the A350 fleet, pre-installation on upcoming Boeing 777X jets, and retrofitting on most Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s beginning in 2027.
