Mohamed Salah opened his account in the Turkish Super Lig with a brilliant double, leading Trabzonspor to a 2-1 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir to secure their first win of the season.
Salah, who recently signed with Trabzonspor on a free transfer following a trophy-laden nine-year spell at Liverpool, delivered a standout performance on Sunday that also featured two goals being disallowed. Making his full league debut after coming off the bench in Trabzonspor’s season opener, the Egyptian winger wasted no time making an impact. He fired his side ahead in the eighth minute, pouncing after Basaksehir goalkeeper Muhammed Sengezer failed to secure the ball.
Although Basaksehir drew level when Eldor Shomurodov converted a penalty in the 19th minute, Salah responded immediately after the break. Just three minutes into the second half, he burst down the right flank, combined neatly with Ernest Muci, and coolly slotted his shot into the far corner to restore Trabzonspor’s lead.
The 34-year-old thought he had sealed a hat-trick late in the game, but a stoppage-time strike was chalked off for a foul in the build-up. Moments later, he had another effort ruled out for offside after curling the ball into an empty net from long range while the opposition goalkeeper was stranded upfield for a corner.
With this impressive domestic display behind him, Salah and his teammates will now shift their focus to Thursday’s UEFA Europa League playoff second leg away against Ferencvaros, seeking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.
