The United Kingdom is preparing to share classified weapons information with Ukraine, allowing the country to manufacture its own version of the Storm Shadow long-range cruise missile. This development comes as UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham visits Kyiv on his first foreign trip as prime minister, coinciding with Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union.
During a ceremony alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Burnham highlighted Russia's ongoing invasion and reaffirmed European support for Ukraine amidst shifting international dynamics. The UK's decision to hand over top-secret blueprints stands in contrast to the United States' reluctance to provide underlying technology for Patriot air defence interceptors.
Military analysts note that producing Storm Shadow missiles domestically will give Kyiv the ability to strike strategic Russian targets more efficiently and at an unprecedented rate. These missiles, which have a range of about 560km (350 miles), are capable of hitting heavily fortified locations that cheaper domestic drones cannot penetrate.
While experts like Keir Giles of Chatham House and Karan Vassil of Sibylline point out that setting up domestic production will face significant security and supply chain challenges, the move marks a crucial step in bolstering Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities against Russian infrastructure.
